This year’s resolutions include pottery classes, Spanish lessons, travel, volunteering, and a graduate certificate. Below I will show you some process photos from pottery classes I have been taking this year — taken with my smartphone.
The first six photos are from the first handbuilding pottery class that I have taken since college (i.e. in 10+ years!).
This is a soft-slab bowl that I imprinted with fabric and then later glazed with a watery green. This geometric vase was made using a hard slab technique — later it was trimmed at the top. Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of this one glazed. I chose glossy black and it would have come out perfectly if I had not been in a rush.Using a mold, I pressed imprinted pieces of clay inside to form a bowl. This was glazed an earthy brown and came out well. Here you can see coil-made bowl. I used this one to test glaze layering (picture not shown).Waiting on the shelf for the next steps! (The red on the geometric vase is the black glaze — it becomes black once fired.)This was another handbuilding project — a vase glazed in blue and clear glazes.Onto the next class! These are two thrown pieces from my first class on the wheel. The cup is the size of an espresso cup and the bowl is small. Here is the finished expresso cup in its blue glaze. It came out quite well! And here is the finished matching small bowl from the wheel class.
I am currently in my third class session for the year. It is a mixed-level wheel class. I have 4 bowls in the works. One has no foot, one has a hand carved base, and the two others will be trimmed later today.
